Common sense is not always as common or as sensible as we'd like it it to be. But overall it seems to work for us pretty well. That is until we're forced to face something that goes in the face of it. This is called a counterintuitive idea. In science it would be things like hot water freezing faster than cold, or the earth revolving around the sun (when it appears the other way around).

But it's not just in the physical world that we find these counterintuitive ideas: Paul, in his letter to the Philippian church offers a counterintuitive truth he has learned from his life: God uses adversity to advance the gospel.

It flies in the face of what you'd normally think, but Paul doesn't labor to tell you why God works this way, instead he wants you to know what your mindset, your center, is to be through adversity:

And here is our big idea that we get from Paul: Whatever your circumstance, make your aim the advancement of the gospel.
