What is at the center of our solar system? Is it the sun or the earth? For 1500 years scientists were convinced that the earth was the center of everything. But they were wrong.

But geocentrism (or earth-centered) thinking isn't the worst kind of centrism you could run into. The worst and most prevalent sort of centrism is "self-centrism." The view that everything is all about me.

As a species we our addicted to ourselves. We love to be the center. Think Facebook and Instagram and "selfies." Or the way we can work a phrase to generate compliments on our outfit or pity for our sad lot in life. But the Bible makes it clear, the self-centric view is wrong and our only hope is for our own Copernican Revolution. A revolution saturated in God's initiating grace and the message of the Gospel.

Thoughts:

Just like the earth-centered view needed to be replaced with a sun-centered view because it is what is true: our self-centered existence needs to be replaced by a Christ-centered existence.

...you were making your duty and your family your center, but Jesus needs to be your center. Jesus will change how you work and do family. I know you thought you were living and doing what’s best for your family by making them everything, but when you make Jesus your everything, that’s what is best for your family.

The gospel is not just the beginning of the Christian life, it is the everyday of the Christian life.

Paul writes so that they (and we) will not lose sight of the Gospel and will continue to grow with Jesus at the center of everything: the purpose of Philippians.
